In sponsored projects, a consortium is an association of two or more organizations, companies, foundations and/or governments used to sponsor a common project. The Office of Strategic Alliances and Technology Transfer drafts and negotiates consortium agreements for MIT.
New Consortium Agreements
A project proposed to be funded by multiple sponsors requires a new consortium agreement, unless the work will be conducted under an existing MIT consortium. For any new multi-sponsor programs:
- The PI or DLCI administrator should notify OSATT and RAS of the intent to create the new multi-sponsor program.
- An OSATT Catalyst engages with the PI and DLCI administrator to identify the plans and needs for the collaboration and the timeline available to draft and negotiate the consortium.
- The Catalyst coordinates the drafting process with the OSATT Strategic Transaction Officer (STO) and the proposal preparation with the DLCI.
Consortium agreements are separately signed by each member. Each agreement should include:
- Benefits document describing the tiers of membership, benefits per tier, and fees
- Description of how renewals are handled
