Overview of Federal Non-Research Rates

MIT applies a rate of 10% MTDC to federal non-research awards used for other activities or instruction. Other rates are used in the following cases:

• Federal non-research with federally mandated rates (such as NIH training grants; T, F, and K awards): Use the federal mechanism mandated rate.
• Research awards, or non-federal non-research: Use the appropriate indirect cost rate.

Non-research activities include:  

• Instruction 
• Educational service 
• Public service 
• Student service 
• Professional travel 
• Professional conferences 
• Graduate and postdoctoral fellowship awards 

DLCIs are not required to fund under-recovery on non-research activity awards.
